A pioneering Black-owned newspaper with a legacy of over a century in chronicling the African American experience. As a Layout and Graphic Designer, I had a pivotal role in visually shaping the stories and narratives that matter most to the African-American community.
On many instances I would need to collaborate directly with the editor and chief in creating creative copy and layout for the front page to compel readers to be invested in the stories we covered.
Commemorative Cover Pages
Every so often after a notable event takes place the New York Amsterdam News would dedicate a specially designed cover page to commemorate the event consisting of either the entire front page or a full spread utilizing both front and back cover pages. Such events of note would be the electing of political figures, the passing of key figures in pop culture who have left their mark in history, and many more.
Dynamic Page Layouts
To keep readers engaged pages needed to have unique properties that drew in the reader while staying in line with the paper's overall design language all while introducing new elements.
This Week In History
Also included in-between current event articles would be reminders of people and events who've made in impact in the course of African American History as a way of keeping them in the forefront of readers minds and hopefully inspire and invoke the need to continue making the changes necessary in a country known as a world leader in a progressive era.
